Robot vacuum problems, downsides and what to avoid
What owners report, what helps, and what to check before you buy.
The most common robot vacuum problem is hair wrapped around the brush: 36% of owners in Consumer Reports’ member surveys report it. Battery problems (21%) and clogs (15%) come next (Aug 23, 2026).

What goes wrong, and how often
| Problem | Owners reporting it | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Hair tangled in the brush | 36% | An anti-tangle brush. The makers of all eleven robots here say theirs resists tangles. |
| Battery problems | 21% | 14% report battery life getting shorter. Check that the maker sells a replacement battery. |
| Clogs | 15% | Empty the bin and clear the brush; a self-emptying dock helps. |
| Dirty filters | 14% | Shake out the filter every few runs and replace it a few times a year. |
| App or online problems | 13% | Check the app’s reviews before you buy. |
| Wi-Fi problems | 12% | Check the robot’s Wi-Fi requirements against your router before you buy. |
Consumer Reports judges reliability over the first four years of ownership. It doesn’t yet have enough data to rate vacuum and mop combos.
The downsides to accept
- Deep carpet dirt. A robot keeps carpet tidy but doesn’t replace an upright for deep cleaning. See carpet.
- Edges and corners. A round robot leaves a strip along baseboards; some push a brush or mop out to reach it. See hard floors.
- Clutter. Cords, socks and rug tassels can stop a robot, so you tidy before a run. Makers of robots with a camera or RGBD (camera plus depth) sensing say they recognize more objects.
- Running costs. Bags, filters, brushes and, after a few years, a battery. See lifespan and maintenance.
- Size. Docks that wash mops are big, and a tall robot won’t fit under a low sofa. See robot heights.
- Door sills. Six of the eleven robots here have a door-sill or obstacle figure of 0.79 in or less. See door sills.
Which robot vacuums to avoid
- Brands without US support or replacement parts: a robot is only as good as the battery and brushes you can still buy.
- New foreign-made models without FCC authorization. Since July 28, 2026, new foreign-made models can’t get FCC authorization without a Conditional Approval. What the FCC rule means.
- A robot that doesn’t fit your home: check your door sills, furniture height and rugs first. That’s what our robot finder does.
